[snipping, hope you don’t mind pitselly]

tl;dr the idea of inherent Starkness or Lannisterness or clan loyalty or clan personality is kind of superfluous, very directly in-text. I personally think it’s something Martin has kind of set up and then taken apart quite eloquently and subtly. Each house is defined by whoever is its most famous member (not always the patriarch, Olenna) and that’s What It Means And Always Meant until they die and some hotshot heir changes it.

However, does this mean I’m ever going to stop sorting Star Trek characters into asoiaf houses? Nnnnnno…

I think all the houses’ self images are, yes, shown to be self-imposed.  They are images that actively need to be embodied, and have the potential to interact in various ways with innate personalities and also current circumstances’ particulars.

And House Stark “simply” shows us this in a different way than the other houses because we approach house Stark from an initial sense of self rather than other.

And yeah I’m not going to stop sorting people into houses either XD IT’S JUST FOR FUN CALM YOURSELF IAGO.

Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. Only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape.

William S. Burroughs

O LIVING always—always dying!
O the burials of me, past and present!
O me, while I stride ahead, material, visible, imperious as ever!
O me, what I was for years, now dead, (I lament not—I am content;)
O to disengage myself from those corpses of me, which I turn and look
at, where I cast them!
To pass on, (O living! always living!) and leave the corpses behind!
