Post-Civil War for sure because Civil War era Democrats were all about states rights and small government. FDR is probably a good marker for the modern Democratic party though.

Welcome all, especially anyone from Göteborg, Sweden!!!
It’s weird thinking of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson as fathers of the Democratic party. I mean obviously as an organization they are, but they’re so ideologically different to the current Democrats. So who would be the go-to figures for “modern” Deomcrats, I mean, when does it “begin”? FDR/New deal? Woodrow Wilson? William Jennings Bryan/populism? Can I sneak more “scare quotes” into this post? Should I have paid attention in high school? Do I just need to go to bed?
